Rates revaluation under way across Mayo

Some businesses will be in for a surprise when a rates revaluation is carried out across the county by the Valuation Office, Fianna Fáil Cllr Paul McNamara said this week. Cllr McNamara made the comment after head of finance for Mayo County Council, Peter Duggan, informed the elected members of Mayo County Council about the revaluation process being carried out across the county by the Valuation Office. He told the members that the exercise will see a redistribution of the rates burden - there will be no change in the amount of rates being collected by the council, but some businesses would see their rates fall and other would see them increase at the end of the process and the process would be carried out every five years. Cllr McNamara said that there is a big difference between the rates businesses that opened in 2006 are paying - and some older businesses. Mr Duggan said that there would be workshops and businesses will be able to come and see what the changes will mean to them.
