375 children wait on hearing tests in County Mayo – Chambers

Fianna Fáil TD for Mayo, Lisa Chambers, has slammed the unacceptable numbers of children waiting on audiology appointments in Mayo.

Deputy Chambers was commenting as the HSE confirmed to her that there are currently 208 children waiting on a new initial assessment and 167 waiting on an existing audiology appointment in County Mayo.

She explained: “Unfortunately while this is disappointing, it is not surprising as lists across the country are similar. 208 children on the waiting list are awaiting an initial appointment. Having undiagnosed hearing problems is a frightening time for a child and their parents.

“I understand that the team in audiology services for the county are working to the best of their ability and under serious constraints, it’s up to the Government to resource them better.

“Hearing aids can be life-changing for many and offer a much better quality of life. As with most ailments, early treatment can help prevent future issues. Early diagnosis and treatment can change a childhood. It is imperative we reduce lists for children waiting on such appointments,” she concluded.
