Bestselling author to speak about life and farming at Museum of Country Life

The National Museum of Ireland - Country Life, Turlough Park, Castlebar, is celebrating Culture Night 2019 with a talk by bestselling author John Connell in the museum galleries at 7pm on Friday, September 20.

John Connell came to prominence early last year when his first non-fiction work, The Cow Book: A Story of Life on an Irish Family Farm, became a number one bestseller. It is a touching and honest memoir about his return to his farming roots in Co Longford. The Cow Book details how farming had been in John’s family for generations, but he never expected to follow in his father’s footsteps. Over the course of one winter, he finds himself living at home on the farm and drawn back into the hypnotic rhythm of farming life.

While charting this journey over a calving season, The Cow Book also explores the history of the cow and its important but often overlooked role in humankind’s development over the past 10,000 years.

On Culture Night, John will speak about The Cow Book and its wide success; what it means to be a farmer’s son or daughter in Ireland today; and what we can learn about sustainability from the lives of our rural ancestors. This is a free Culture Night event with music, refreshments and after-hours access to the galleries and exhibitions. No booking required. For further information, visit www.museum.ie/country-life
