Three members of the Castlebar Municipal District have been appointed to sit on the newly formed Castlebar Swimming Pool Committee this week. The three members are Cllr Blackie Gavin, Cllr Ger Deere and Cllr Michael Kilcoyne.
Cllr Kilcoyne said that he was still getting complaints from members of the public on the pricing structures where people have to pay to use the gym as well as the pool, even if they just want to go for a swim - comparing it to having to get a shave when you just wanted a haircut.
Cllr Martin McLoughlin queried whether there needed to be a gender balance in the nominees from the council, Cllr Kilycone responded that this was just the council's nominees and the full make up of the committee had yet to be decided. Cllr McLoughlin suggested that the council should lead by example on the issue - to which Cllr Kilcoyne quipped that he was amazed that Fianna Fáil didn't think of that when they were doing their nominations for the local elections. The party had no female nominees in the Castlebar Municipal District.
Cllr McLoughlin's party colleague hit back at Cllr Kilcoyne asking would the committee start the campaign for a 50 meter pool - referencing Cllr Kilcoyne's support for a 50m pool rather than the 25m pool which was built, when the item was put to a vote in the previous council. Cllr Ger Deere joined in saying that he would hate to see how much the charges would be if it was a 50m pool.
