Crunch time at the top and bottom of the table in the top flight

Soccer: Mayo League

Ballina Town and Westport United kept up their pursuit of Super League table toppers Castlebar Cetlic last weekend, with wins over tricky opponents.

The north Mayo men were 3-0 winners over Manulla last Friday night with a Benny Lavelle brace and David O'Mahony strike in the second half seeing the defending champions pick up their tenth league win of the season. United saw off Ballyglass 2-0 in Keaveny Park on Sunday morning to keep up their title challenge - Jesper Frisch hitting the back of the net in the first half and Peter Corcoran scoring the vital second goal late on. Those wins leave Ballina Town two points behind Celtic and United three points off the leaders - however they have played two and one game more respectively than the Celtic Park outfit.

In the battle to avoid the drop, Snugboro United and Ballyhaunis Town played out a 0-0 draw in Conway Park last weekend - the draw leaves both sides locked on six points and one point off safety with Straide and Foxford currently occupying the all important eighth place in the table. The aforementioned Green Road outfit were put to the sword in their game last weekend by Claremorris, who ran out 8-0 winners at home. Rokas Mikuckis hit the back of the net four times with Oisin Brady, David McCracken, Calvin Joyce and Dean Roddy all grabbing a goal each.

This weekend will see Straide and Foxford face another very tough test when they host Castlebar Celtic on Saturday evening, the Hoops' will be looking to get back to winning ways after they lost their last league outing 3-1 to Manulla - having won their previous ten games in a blistering start to the league season. Ballyhaunis Town will be hoping to make home advantage count in their battle to avoid the drop when they host Ballyglass in Station Rise on Saturday evening - games and time is running out for the east Mayo men if they are to pull clear of Snugboro United and Straide and Foxford United if they are to avoid the drop.

The third game on Saturday will take place in Carramore at 4.30pm when Manulla host Snugboro United - the hosts will be well favored to win this one and pick up their ninth league win of the season. On Sunday morning Westport United will host Claremorris in United Park - the visitors will be full of confidence after hitting eight goals last weekend, but their hosts will pose a far more difficult test for the south Mayo men.

The final game in the top flight will see Ballyheane host Ballina Town in Quigley Park on Sunday morning. The hosts sit 21 points behind their visitors in the standings but will fancy their chances of derailing the defending champions attempts to keep hold of the Super League crown.

Ballina Town B are Premier Division champions

For the second year in a row, Ballina Town B have claimed a league title - the north Mayo men who won the League One title last season, backed that up this year by winning the Premier Division with four games left to go last weekend. They put seven past their fellow north Mayo men, Iorras Aointaithe, in Carnenash to record their 13th win all season - with their only points dropped coming after a 2-2 draw away to Kiltimagh-Knock United earlier this month.

Behind them in the table there is currently a three-way battle that could become a four-way battle if Manulla B take the points from their games in hand for second place. At the moment Swinford and Glenhest Rovers are locked together on 27 points, while Kiltimagh-Knock United are two points further back with all three sides having four games left.

This weekend will see Kiltimagh-Knock United travel to Fahy Rovers looking to keep themselves in touch with the rest on Saturday evening, also taking place at the same time the newly crowned champions will be at home to a bottom of the table Achill Rovers. On Sunday morning, Swinford will host Manulla B at 11am while Glenhest Rovers will be away to Conn Rangers.

Crossmolina and Newport-Mulranny Wanders take home cup titles

It was divisional cup finals weekend in Solar 21 Park last weekend, Crossmolina claimed the Tonra Cup wth a 3-1 win over Claremorris B on Saturday last. The north Mayo men claimed the title thanks to goals from Shane Hennigan, Shaun Cadden and Niall Corbett with Simon Collins bagging a late consolation goal for the south Mayo outfit.

On Sunday, Newport-Mulranny Wanderers won the McDonnell Cup on penalties after coming from 2-0 midway through the second half against Moy Villa. The north Mayo men James Doherty and Ciaran Gaughan hitting the net. Jack Hanley slotted home a penalty for the west coast men to bring them back into the game and dramatically Tim Davitt headed home an injury time equaliser to send the game to extra time. The game went to penalties with Newport-Mulranny Wanderers bringing on sub keeper Pawel Wojciechowicz for the spot kicks and the decision worked with playing a key role in the shoot-out to win the cup for his side.
