A fundraising cycle in aid of Nurture Africa - an Irish charity based in Nansana, Uganda, will take place on Sunday, July 21.
This will be the first ever wild Nephin cycle for Nurture Africa and is being organised by Gina Corbett, who said: "I started volunteering with them in 2013 and go for two weeks each year. The volunteering stints are short so that the Ugandans run the clinic themselves.
"Going there has changed my life literally. Priorities have certainly changed. As I go there regularly I can see how the funds raised are used; every penny goes to good use. The first year I went we started to build a community centre; it was finished off the following Summer and then expanded the next year. It's easy for me to commit to fundraising because I'm sure of the use of the monies."
The upcoming event will be a cycle of just under 50km in length. Outlining the route, Gina said: "We will start off from the Newport N.S car park, making our way out Glenhest on the R317, from there we will turn onto the R312 under the shadow of Nephin Mór, then we will take a left at the Kennagh crossroads and up to wild Nephin, where we will be blessed with breathtaking views of Bunaveala lake and the Nephin Beg mountains.
"On we will go through Shramore and alongside Lough feeagh and Furance before turning off onto the N59 and back to Newport at the finish. It will be €30 to take part in this event and there will be refreshments during the race at selected areas as well as after at Newport NS.
"The event will take place on Sunday, July 21 at 9am, registration will take place from 8am. Sponsorship cards will also be made available soon and all monies raised will be going to Nurture Africa."
