The main attention switches from the league to the league cup this weekend, with four sides left in the hunt for the Westaro Cup.
The semi-finals of the competition will take place on Sunday, with Ballyheane and Westport United getting things going on Sunday morning at 11am in Quigley Park - that will be followed up in Keavney Park when Ballyglass host Ballina Town at 2.30pm.
The clash of Ballyheane and Westport United will be the two teams' second meeting in three weeks - they met in the league in the same venue in mid June and the visitors ran out 3-1 winners, thanks to a brace of goals from Darren Browne and a strike from Brandon Scahill, with Liam Irwin grabbing Ballyheane's goal.
Westport had no game last weekend, due to a death in the club - while Ballyheane were at home to Claremorris and slipped to their eight league defeat of the season, with the south Mayo men running out 2-0 winners, thanks to goals from Cathal Walsh and Ronan Commons. Ballyheane head into this game on the back of a four game losing streak and will be keen to put a stop to that - however they will find it very difficult against the visitors, who themselves are going into this game on the back of a loss after they went down 2-1 to Castlebar Celtic in their last outing.
The other semi-final promises to be another interesting encounter when the league champions head to Ballyglass. Ballina Town had a big 6-2 win over Snugboro United in the league last weekend, to take their goal tally to 13 in their last two games, having put seven past Claremorris in their previous game. United are five points behind league leaders Castlebar Celtic and have played a game more than the Hoops' - leaving them with a very difficult task of trying to defend that title, so picking up some silverware elsewhere will be a major goal and this game will offer them a chance to move a step closer to that.
Ballyglass were held by a resurgent Straide and Foxford United in Green Road last weekend in the league, Evan Connolly and Aaron Darcy had put Ballyglass into a 2-0 lead in that game, but Conor Sherry cut the gap to a single goal with a quarter of an hour to go before Paul Moran struck for the vital fourth goal in the game. When these two teams met in the league earlier in the season Ballina Town ran out 3-1 winners in the same venue, with Jamie Cawley, Dylan McKee and Johnny Cocozza grabbing the goals in that meeting.
The only Super League game down for decision this weekend is the meeting of Ballyhaunis Town and Manulla in Station Rise, the hosts badly need to pick up some points if they are going to reel back in a Straide and Foxford United side who have started to pull away a small bit from the the bottom two sides in the race to avoid the drop.
They would probably prefer to be facing someone else than the side who brought Castlebar Celtic's 100 per cent start to the league season to a juddering halt last Sunday in Carramore, where they were 3-1 winners. Celtic took the lead in that game through a goal of the season contender from Jordan Loftus. However Manulla dragged themselves level through a Gary McHale strike before Niall Brennan grabbed a brace of goals to pick up the points from the Carramore side.
