Club competitions have been in full swing around Mayo with some top class scoring from players across the county.
Balla
It was President's Day (Don Dillon ) in Balla last week and Richie Murphy was the winner with a score of 56pts, Ultan O'Flatharta finished in second place one point back, with the gross prize going to Ronan Mahon and third place going to PJ Brett. The category winners were Martin Moylette and Bob Leggett. The past president's prize was claimed by John Parsons and the nearest the pin went to Jimmy Sheridan. The ladies' win went to Aine MhicSuibhne with a score of 56pts, second place was claimed by Louise McMahon with Julie Loftus the gross winner and Mary B O'Donnell claiming third place. The category winners were Carmel Costello and Margaret Forkan and the nearest the pin went to Mary Gillard.
The rumble competition was won by the trio of Paul Galvin, Alan Broderick and Paraic Cuffe; they were followed home by the team of Breege Jennings, Gabrielle Clesham and Pauline O'Connor and third place went to Stephen Minogue, Paraic Cresham and Kathleen Minogue. The midweek scramble went to Breege Moran, Danny Lyons and Pat Leydon, second place was won by Mary Conlon, Mary B Prendergast and John Hyland, while third place went to the trio of PJ Brett, Teresa Melvin and Alo Filan.
Ballinrobe
Last weekend's competition was a club AM-AM which was won by Jimmy Sheridan, Jacki Frazer, Gabriel Clesham and Michael Clesham with a score of 110pts, second place was claimed by the team of Micky Divilly, Brendan Martyn, James Gaynor, Peter Gaynor and Peter Collins. The third placed prize was won by Nathan Hession, Darragh Hession, Dylan Walsh and Robert Moran - they were followed home by Mike Fannon, Sean O'Connor, Pearce O'Donoghue and David Heneghan and fifth place was claimed by Tony O'Toole, Kevin Finnegan, David Slattery and Dean Hacker. The ladies' competition was won by the team of Mary Daly, Marian Walsh, Helen Healy and Breege Costello, second place went to Emer Ferrick, Anne Gavin, Terry Mullan and Martina Cummins
Castlebar
In the ladies' 18 hole stableford competition Regina Kerr was the winner with a score of 37pts, second place went to Gina Kelly, third place to Lorna Irwin and Ilish McGing came home in fourth spot. In the lady captain charity day competition sponsored by B&B Foods Sinead Egan was the winner with a score of 41pts, Beverly Flynn finished in second spot, third place was claimed by Derval Molloy, Gina Kelly finished in fourth spot with Alicia Murray finishing in fifth place and sixth going to Breta Fitzmaurice. The ladies' ten-hole stableford was won by Breda Gannon who scored 25pts, Ilish McGing finished in second place and Monica Joyce came home in third place. The second year beginners five hole competition was won by Hilda Dunne who scored 12pts, with Sophia McHugh coming home in second place three points further back.
Claremorris
Pat Dillon was the winner of the ladies' nine hole competition last weekend with a score of 14pts, with Noreen Curley finishing in second place one point behind. The men's competition was won by Brendan Walsh with a score of 69 nett.
Mulranny
Bernie Masterson will host his Captain’s Day on Sunday next. Golfers are advised to have their names down for an AM or PM draw which takes place on Friday evening. Text (087 ) 2487826 if you are not entered and wish to play. The ladies nine hole competition will commence at 4pm on the day.
Vinnie Feeney continued his impressive season with a 65 net to win the stroke competition at the weekend. Paddy Chambers finished second with a 67, while third spot went to Shane McDermott on 68. Vinnie is the nearest challenger to Golfer of the Year leader, Vinnie Gannon but there could be a shake-up after next Sunday with extra points on offer.
The champions of two years ago - Denis Gallagher and Michael Joyce - are safely through to the quarter-finals of the Allergan club match play fourball. All outstanding matches should be played by next weekend. Entries are now being taken for Autumn Cup singles match play championship.
Swinford
The club 18-hole stableford competition was won by Doug Cairns with a score of 40pts, Sean Comer finished in second place and Keith McHugh finished in third spot. The scramble competition was won by Gerry Ronayne, Tony Mulligan and Mark McDonnell.
Michael John McDonnell Golf Classic
The annual Michael John McDonnell Golf Classic in support of Western Care Association takes place in Westport Golf Club on Friday, July 5. This competition is one of the most popular Am Ams held in Westport Golf Club with between 50 and 60 teams competing each year. The prize for the winning team this year is an opportunity to play the world famous Mount Juliet Golf Course, in Kilkenny. There will also be an array of very valuable prizes for the following seven teams plus a ladies team prize, longest drive and nearest the pin, this year’s competition is guaranteed to attract wide interest and support – early booking is essential. The competition is a four-ball stableford open to ladies, gents and mixed teams with the time sheet running from 8am to 5.30pm.
