While most eyes this weekend will be focused on the goings on in Newry on Saturday night for club players in the junior championship - it is all about what will happen on Sunday. There are 20 championship games taking place in the Junior A, B and C championships on Sunday afternoon across the county.
The Junior A championship is where the main focus will be with three of the four groups coming to a conclusion on Sunday afternoon. In group one the two sides to make it into the last eight have already been decided with both Kilmeena and Kilmovee Shamrocks sitting at the top of the table with four points after two wins from two games.
Those sides will face off in Breaffy on Sunday at 1pm with the winner going into the last eight draw as the seeded side, Kilmeena have been flying in the championship this year running in 9-41 in wins over Ballina Stephenities and Ballycroy and will go into this weekend's game as favourites to pick up top spot. While Kilmovee will be happy to have made it into the last eight they have had it harder in their two games so far - seeing off Ballycroy by three points in round two and Ballina by two points in round one.
The meeting of Ballycroy and Ballina in Crossmolina at 1pm on Sunday will decide who is safe for next year, with the losers entering the relegation play-offs. While both sides were well beaten by Kilmeena they both put it up to Kilmovee in their games against the east Mayo men and a tough close encounter should be in store in this one.
Things are much tougher to figure out where the second place in the last eight will go to in group two. Castlebar Mitchels are home and hosed in the last eight ahead of their meeting with Charlestown on Sunday in Swinford with two wins from two. So the main focus in this group will be directed towards Crossmolina where Ballycastle and Cill Chomain will clash at 3pm.
Both sides have beaten Charlestown and lost to Castlebar, leaving them locked level on two points each, with the north Mayo men edging it in the points difference standings by a single point. It is pretty simple, whoever wins will go into the quarter-finals, while a draw will also do for Cill Chomain on the basis of their better scoring difference.
In group three the top two are already sorted with both Kilmaine and Ballintubber into the quarter-finals with two wins in the bank from their opening two games. The teams will clash on Sunday in Ballinrobe to decide who will have the seeded spot in the last eight draw. The other game in the group is the most vital one, with Tourmakeady and Killala meeting in Parke, with the loser heading into the relegation play-off. The north Mayo men have the edge on scoring difference so a draw would also see them safe and out of danger. That game throws in at 1pm.
