Progress on Attymass and Knockmore sewerage schemes welcomed

The members of the Ballina electoral area welcomed the progress reports they were given on the Knockmore and Attymass sewerage schemes at their meeting this week. Mr Brian O’Reilly, senior engineer with the water services department, told the meeting that the Knockmore scheme will have capacity for an extra 80 houses. The project is expected to cost in the region of €1.2 million and will be carried out under the small schemes programme.

“We don’t have the money to do it in 2009 so it falls in behind the Neale and Mayo Abbey in relation to schemes, but it will be at the top of the list for 2010,” he added.

Knockmore based councillor Seamus Weir welcomed the news telling the meeting: “This will be a great benefit to the people of the community and all the people who live and will live in it.”

Mr O’Reilly went on to give the councillors a progress report on the Attymass scheme which is at the first, but most important, stage in the process. “At the minute we have 26 houses and about 130 people living in Attymass, but this new scheme will be capable to deal with up to 60 houses and 300 people when completed. It will also cost €1.2 million, and be funded under the small schemes project where the council with have to come up with 25 per cent of the funding. But because of the early stage nature of this project it will be a bit back in the queue,” he outlined. Fianna Fáil councillor Annie May Reape welcomed the announcement of the scheme for Attymass.
