Number of events coming up for A Voice for John

John Gayer is a 55-year-old veterinary surgeon who lives with his wife Miriam and three children in Mayo, Ireland.

In January 2018 he received the devastating diagnosis of Motor Neuron disease(MND ) and in a very short space of time has gone from a hard working father and vet to near total paralysis. John is now confined to a wheelchair and needs full time care, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, which is provided by his wife, family, neighbours and friends in his home of Claremorris.

In order to raise funds to help John, members of the Monaghan family and close friends will be cycling from Mizen to Malin head on Saturday, June 22

The plan is to complete this 600km journey in a relay format in 24 hours. The target is €50,000 for the Irish Motor Neuron Disease Association. The campaign is called 'A Voice for John' as funds will be used to access Eye Gaze technology to assist patients to communicate if their voice or speech has been affected by the disease.

There are also lots of events taking place in the Claremorris area in support of IMNDA so take your pick and come along. All funds raised are going to the IMNDA

Events include a fancy dress 5k walk/fun run in Claremorris on the June 23; there is also a raffle taking place on the day with the top cash prize of €300. Tickets can be purchased before the event in Dixons Vets Claremorris and Grange Veterinary Claremorris. Admission is €10 and children under 12 go free.

A 25 card drive in Claremorris GAA Club will also be held on Wednesday, June 19 starting at 9pm with a raffle on the night while a Sponsored Spinathon will take place in The Square on Saturday, June 22, at 11am.
