Minister for Rural and Community Development, Michael Ring TD, has welcomed the news that a planning application by the OPW has been submitted to Mayo County Council for a new facility in Westport for the Irish Coast Guard Service .
Speaking this week Minister Ring stated: "I understand that a planning application was lodged earlier this month with Mayo County Council and pre-planning meetings have taken place. During this Planning period, work will continue on the detailed drawings and tender documents.
"It is hoped, provided that planning permission is granted, that tenders will issue later this year and the project will commence construction early in 2020. There is a 12-15 month construction period allowed for the project. The proposed building will consist of a two-storey accommodation block and a single-storey boathouse and vehicle store and the provision of car parking spaces.
"I am pleased to see this project progressing. The new Coast Guard Station in Westport will facilitate the Irish Coast Guard Rescue services and it will be a welcome addition to this area. The issue of the new Coast Guard Station is something that I have pursued for quite some time with the OPW. This facility is urgently required by the Coast Guard Rescue services. I again, compliment all the coastguards on the wonderful work they carry out."
