The breath-taking landscapes of Achill Island, from the majestic mountains to miles of unspoilt beaches, all battered by the power of the Atlantic Ocean, makes this little corner of the West of Ireland a unique source of artistic inspiration, which is beautifully captured by the photography of Sean Cannon.
Cannon's relationship with Achill began as a young boy walking Keem Bay and Keel Beach with his family, and after many summers visiting Achill, he opened the Western Light Art Gallery with his wife Margaret in 1989. The gallery has become a haven for artists across a broad range of styles and has built up an international reputation in the artistic world.
With the release of his first-ever book Edge of Light, Cannon has specially chosen an intimate collection of images that present Achill Island in its many moods, to celebrate 30 years of photography, exhibited in the gallery.
With a mixture of photographs in both black and white and colour, this enchanting selection includes some of his most loved and celebrated images, expertly illustrating Achill’s fragile beauty. The result is a unique album that is both compelling and graceful; a fond tribute to the photographer’s island home that locals, visitors and collectors can all enjoy and savour.
The book will be launched by John F. Deane, Achill-born poet, on Sunday, June 2 in the Western Light Art Gallery on Achill Island.
