Uddin looks to make an impact

Kamal Uddin is no stranger to putting his name forward for election - having contested the 2014 local elections and the 2016 general election as an independent.

Uddin has thrown his hat in the ring again for this month's local elections in the Castlebar electoral area - this time as a member of the Labour Party, looking to win a seat for the party for the first time since Johnny Mee retired from politics in 2009.

Uddin is originally from Bangladesh but moved to Mayo nearly 20 years ago and lives in Castlebar with his wife and three brothers and runs a small business with his family in Kiltimagh. He feels that being a business person gives him the insight and experience to help small business owners and workers if elected.

Other priorities for Uddin, if elected, include doing more to help combat climate change and helping Castlebar become a greener and safer place to live. He also wants to see that proper planning in the town is protected and to lead against developer-led planning. Uddin said he also wants to see the delivery of a strong public housing model in the Castlebar area along with the continued delivery of improved community infrastructure, and to see improvements in services across rail, road and cycleways. Finally he wants to see Castlebar become a fair place for people to live and work.
