Gardens For Charity On Target

Home and Garden

Westport’s Clewbay Garden Trail (CBGT ) is on track to reach €100,000 in donations for its chosen charities since the trail began in 2012. Now in its eighth year, seven of the nine gardens in the 2019 trail have nominated the Mayo Roscommon Hospice Foundation (charity reg no 10980 ) which is about to open its 14 bed unit at Knockaphunta , Castlebar. This essential Palliative Care facility is striking in its concept and beauty and features courtyards, therapy rooms, individual bedrooms with patio gardens.

Martina Jennings, CEO, invited CBGT to see the new facility and to suggest planting schemes for the individual courtyards and common areas. She added: “In 2018, Specialist Palliative Care Teams in Mayo and Roscommon looked after 1018 patients, 43% of which were non-cancer. We had 647 new patients and 473 people passed away in our care. Our inspiring and tireless teams ensured dignity and respect at end of life to the 473 patients who passed away. These are not just numbers. They represent sons, daughters, fathers, mothers, partners, grandparents, grandchildren and friends.

"Our palliative care nurses, consultants, care workers, social workers and family therapist ensure that each of the patients they look after are treated like the unique individuals they are, and their families are given every support possible at the most difficult time. Work is due to be completed May 2019 in Castlebar for our state of the art, 14 bed Specialist Palliative Care Unit. This is wonderful news for the people of our region in need and we are so proud to be delivering this project on behalf of those who have worked tirelessly over the last number of years to bring it to fruition. At a cost of €10 million, this build would not be happening without your fantastic fundraising efforts. We will be scheduling open days this summer for everyone to see the completed hospice before it is open to patients. We thank you for helping us to fund our palliative care services, and ask you for your continued help financially as the demand for our services is significantly increasing.”

Clewbay Garden Trail Gardeners are committed to supporting their chosen charities and this year’s Headline charity, the Hospice. All are welcome to attend this year’s launch of the 2019 brochure at Homeland , Lodge Rd, Westport, by Hugh Wallace, award winning architect and judge of RTE’s Home of the Year and Presenter of Great House Revival .

The launch takes place at 11am on Thursday, May 30 and the first garden to open its gates will be Gort na Gréine, Knappagh, Westport, on Saturday and Sunday , June 1 and 2 from 1-5pm.
