Three way tie at the top of the table

Soccer: Mayo League Super League

At the time of writing, three sides are tied at the top of the Elverys Sports Super League, but with Castlebar Celtic playing last night against local rivals Snugboro United, they could join Ballina Town, Westport United and Ballyglass at the top of the table.

Last weekend saw two rounds of action taking place with a round on Thursday night and again on Sunday. On Thursday night Celtic picked up their fifth win from five games, seeing off Ballyhaunis Town 4-1 in Station Rise. Defending league champions Ballina Town beat Claremorris by the same score, while Manulla pulled off a big win as they build up to this weekend's Connacht Junior Cup final, seeing off the up to then unbeaten Westport United 5-3 in Carramore, while Ballyheane beat Straide and Foxford United 3-1.

On Sunday morning Straide and Foxford United showed there is still fight left in them as they pushed Ballina Town all the way, losing out by the odd goal in five to the north Mayo men. Jamie Cawley put Ballina Town in front in the first half, Damien Fitzpatrick levelled it up just after the turn around, but the Belleek Park men hit back with goals from Benny Lavelle and Dylan Edwards - Josh Kelly pulled on back for the home side but the visitors held on for the win.

Tom Keaveney's Ballyglass picked up their sixth win of the season to go level at the top with a 2-1 win over Claremorris at home. The sides were level at the break, but the visitors broke the deadlock early in the second half through David McCracken. Ryan Connolly levelled it up before Darren Murray grabbed the winner for Ballyglass.

The other game on Sunday morning saw Ballyheane pick up their second win in four days, seeing off Snugboro United 3-2 in Quigley Park. The home side made harder work of this result than they needed to, Nathan Reilly Doyle put them in front early on and they doubled their lead through Lorcan Bradley who struck from distance. The Boro' pulled one back through a fine opportunist lob by Dylan Felle, Ian Atoi put two between the sides once again midway through the second half. The visitors pulled one back late on through Ronan McTigue, but it was too little to late.

This weekend's action in the top flight gets underway on Saturday night with two games down for decision - Claremorris host Ballyhaunis Town in what is a must-win game for both sides - but the need is greater for the east Mayo men. A victory for the Station Rise side will see them pull level with Claremorris in the table. The other game is a top of the table clash between Ballina Town and Westport United in Belleek Park. Both sides are locked together on 18 points each at the minute. Ballina have played eight games so far, winning six and losing two, while Westport United fell to their first loss of the season last week against a high flying Manulla. If the race for the title remains as close as it has been so far for the rest of the season, the outcome of this game could have a major impact on the destination of the title.

On Sunday morning two other tasty encounters are lined up, Castlebar Celtic will host Ballyglass - where a win for the homeside would see them pull level with Ballyglass on 18 ponits. The Hoops' are the only unbeaten side left in the division and they will be keen to maintain that, but Ballyglass will be sure to not give anything easy.

At the other end of the table the bottom two will face off against each other with Straide and Foxford United travelling to Conway Park to take on Snugboro United. The Boro' have just a point to their name so far, while Straide and Foxford are pointless at this minute. A win for both sides is vital to their ambitions to stay up in the top flight for next season.
