Mayo Mountain Rescue called out twice this week

Mayo Mountain Rescue (MMRT ) personnel were called out twice this week to assist a hiker in the Wild Nephin/Ballycroy National Park on Wednesday evening and a climber on Croagh Patrick on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday evening they were called to Wild Nephin/Ballycroy National Park by Gardai along with coastguard units from Achill Island and Ballyglass to assist a hiker who had become disorientated navigating in unfamiliar terrain

MMRT set up a mobile command unit at Letterkeen and dispatched search teams to locations along the Bangor Trail. They were in contact with the hiker by mobile phone and located the hiker near the northern end of the trail shortly after their search commenced. A spokesperson for MMRT said: "The hiker made the call early for help so that the search could be initiated in daylight hours which ensured the hiker was found without delay. While weather conditions were good, it is a reminder that it is easy to become disorientated navigating in unfamiliar terrain and having a fully charged mobile phone and proper equipment, as this hiker did, was key to locating the hiker before dark."

On Tuesday evening MMRT were called by Gardai at 4.20pm to assist with a casualty on Croagh Patrick. Their first response team located the female casualty, who had sustained a lower leg injury, on a descent of the north side of the mountain. They were able to remove the casualty by stretcher to a waiting ambulance, with the incident concluding at 7.55pm.
