Widening of bottleneck on main Crossmolina and Lahardane Road long overdue – Gill

Fine Gael Local Election Candidate from Crossmolina, Kieran Gill, has raised concerns about a stretch of road at Castlehill on the R315 between Crossmolina and Lahardane.

Speaking this week he said: "Local residents and road users have been complaining about this stretch of road for many years now and I was particularly struck by the number of households complaining of this issue while I was out canvassing in the area.

"It is a busy road for local traffic including school buses and is also used by people travelling from Crossmolina, Kilfian and Ballycastle, travelling to Castlebar. However the road is not fit for road users and is unsafe. There is a stone wall either side of this narrow stretch of road. It is not easy for two cars travelling in opposite directions to pass each other. This is made worse when it is school buses, tractors and HGVs. There have been accidents, near misses and the stone wall frequently clipped.

"Looking at the condition of this stretch road it’s hard to believe it is designated a regional road when it has been neglected for so long. It’s very disappointing to see it was given no priority by the last council even though a commitment was given.

"If elected I intend immediately to get it back on the agenda and seek funding for the bottleneck to be taken out. I have already made tentative enquiries in this regard. I don’t think the situation as it stands is acceptable."
