Local election candidate in the Westport area, Shane Fitzgerald, has said he has been 'out and about meeting people recently and has observed and been informed of many issues within Westport, Newport and Louisburgh which should have been dealt with long ago'.
Fitzgerald said he feels these matters reflect badly on current elected councillors and stated: "I keep hearing that there are no council funds and less staff. I feel this is not good enough and I have constantly seen dirty, damaged, overgrown and faded signage throughout our community.
"On our streets, weed control and litter has become a joke, our footpaths are in need of repair. Our rural roads are worn with serious potholes and in places roads are subsiding. I feel there is a health and safety issue with some broken signs lying in hedgerows for long periods of time, in particular on the Leenane road, which is a serious black spot for crashes. As a tourism destination area these issues reflect poorly on our community."
