Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke has written to Irish Water and Mayo County Council asking for the provision for a sewage link to Corheens in Breaffy as part of the works during the development of the N5, which is set to start construction in September.
The Castlebar based councillor stated in his correspondence that this would be a prudent use of the state's resources and would avoid very expensive costs at a later stage to service the populated area of Breaffy.
He went on to say: "The diggers will be on site and all that would need to be done on Irish Water's side would be to supply the pipe and the level it is to be laid at.
"This is an ideal opportunity to make this provision, make cost savings and future proof the provision of sewage to the Corheens area of Breaffy. The first two zones of Breaffy sewerage have been completed and will be operational in the coming months."
Cllr Burke added that he is currently pressurising Irish water to start the next three zones which will take in the rest of Breaffy village and he is hopeful that the Killknock area and Lavin’s Fruit & Veg along with the Corheens area can be brought into the scheme 'as this is vital and the economics of it stack up for Irish Water'.
