The big game last weekend was the meeting of Manulla and Castlebar Celtic in the semi-final of the Connacht Cup in Carramore.
The homeside were the ones celebrating at the end of this one, following a comprehensive 4-0 win over the Hoops' and if they had taken their chances, they could have won by a few more goals.
From the first to the last minute of this one, Danny O'Leary's men bossed the game and could have been 2-0 up inside the opening five minutes, with Darragh Byrne denied by a fine Stephen Cafferkey save, and Jesse Devers hitting the bar with a rasper of a half-volley from the edge of the area.
Manulla did finally break the deadlock just before the break, when Gerry Canavan headed home a looping Devers cross. Seven minutes after the break he made it 2-0, when Devers once again was the provider for Canavan after a quick break from defence. For their third goal, Canavan turned provider, swinging in a dangerous cross that was missed by everyone, bar Darragh Byrne who came steaming in at the back post.
The visiting fans thought they had a penalty after Jose Sola was taken down in the Manulla penalty area, but the play was called all the way back to just outside their own penalty box, because it was adjudged by the officials they didn't take a free kick from the right spot. The game was wrapped up with 19 minutes to go, when Den Beya, whose quick feet saw him round a defender and goalkeeper, before finishing to the back of the net from close range.
Manulla move on to face Galway outfit, Corrib Rangers, in the final next month and after their dismantling of Celtic the last day, they will be confident of having a real cut at winning that title.
Also making a provincial final last weekend was Killala, who claimed a spot in the Connacht Shield final following a 3-0 win on penalties against Glen Celtic at homem after the game finished 3-3 after extra time. The north Mayo men came from two downm despite taking an early lead through Ryan Sweeney, but found themselves 3-1 down early in the second half, after goals from Ryan McHugh, Michael Heneghan and Ciaran Truatt. Ryan Gallagher cut the gap back to a single goal from the penalty spot and Tommy Lyons levelled it up from a header. There was nothing to separate the sides at the end of normal time or extra time and Gallagher was their hero from spot kicks saving two and scoring one himself to book their spot in the final. It could be an all Mayo final as Manulla B look to follow in the footsteps of their A side in making a provincial final when they take on Knocknacarra at home on Sunday at 2pm.
Ballyglass hit ten, Ballina bag eight and Westport hit five on high scoring weekend
Westport United picked up their fourth league win of the season with a 5-0 win at home over Super League newbies, Ballyhaunis Town, last Saturday night. Darren Browne and Phil Keegan both scored a brace, with Brandon Scahill grabbing the other in a comfortable win for the Covies. Ballina Town also had a comfortable win over the other top flight new boys Snugboro United, running out 8-0 winners, with Dylan Edwards bagging a hat-trick, Brendan Lavelle grabbing a brace and the other goals coming from Niall Leahy, Stephen Melvin and Jamie Cawley.
Amazingly, Ballina Town were not the top scorers in the division last weekend, with Ballyglass putting ten past Straide and Foxford United - JP O'Gorman hit the back of the net four times, Ryan Connolly bagged himself a hat-trick and Conor Henaghan helped himself to a brace, with Aaron Darcy scoring the other goal for Tom Connolly's side.
The other Super League game last weekend was a much lower scoring affair with just the four goals being shared equally between Claremorris and Ballyheane - Simon Butler scored twice for the south Mayo men, with Darragh Moran grabbing two for the visitors, to share the spoils.
This weekend's action moves from the league to the divisional cup and the mouthwatering clash between Westport United and Castlebar Celtic on Saturday evening in United Park is the highlight of the round one action. The other game is the meeting of Ballyhaunis Town and Claremorris in east Mayo - both games kick off at 6pm.
