Erris based Sinn Féin councillor, Teresa Whelan, has said one of the biggest issues coming up on the doorsteps on her canvas is the lack of broadband.
Whelan hosted a broadband information evening in Bangor Erris recently and speaking afterwards she said: "I felt it was crucial to call this meeting regarding the status of broadband; I was delighted that Stephan Caralon, broadband officer with Mayo County Council, could attend to give an up to date report on the national broadband plan.
"After months of lobbying, I am pleased to confirm that the three community centres for the broadband connection points are as follows: Ballycroy Community Centre , Keel Community Centre and Bellderrig Community Centre, who will be connected ahead of the national broadband plan."
"I also welcome the announcement that Bangor Erris will go live on May 1, with fibre to the cabinet which will give access to high speed broadband to some areas in Bangor Erris, and while I welcome this I will continue to work for all households and communities to have affordable broadband connections. I also want to acknowledge the attendance of Alan McGrath from Atlantic Computers and Westnet and thank them for their ongoing efforts to ensure Erris and Achill and the surrounding areas are not left behind."
