Celtic set out their stall in early rounds

Soccer: Mayo League

Castlebar Celtic laid out their intentions to be serious title challengers this season by backing up their Connacht Cup win over Ballina Town the previous week, with a second victory over the defending champions last Saturday night.

Jordan Loftus was once again the main man, bagging two to go with the four he had scored the previous week in their 3-1 win - this weekend Celtic will be hot favourites to pick up their third league win when the make the short trip to Conway Park on Sunday morning.

Sungboro United have yet to pick up a point this season, after coming up to the top flight having claimed the Premier League crown. Last weekend, they were beaten 3-0 by Claremorris in Concannon Park and while they will be relishing this local derby, Celtic will be expected to go home with points.

Westport United made it two from two last weekend with a 4-1 win over Ballyheane, with Jesper Frisch grabbing a brace along with goals from Darren Browne and Brandon Scahill - with Paddy Burke getting the goal for Ballyhaune.

This weekend they will look to make it three from three when they travel to Green Road to take on a Straide and Foxford United side, who also have yet to pick up a point in the league this season, having lost their three opening games. Their latest defeat came at the hands of Super League new boys, Ballyhaunis Town, who came out on the right side of a five goal thriller.

Ballyhaunis Town were 3-0 up at the break, with Cathal Carney bagging a brace and Kris Toffer getting the other - but Straide and Foxford United showed the fighting spirit they will need to draw on again during the season, with Chris Downey and Conor Sherry pulling back a goal each - but Ballyhanis were able to hold on and pick up their first win of the season.

The east Mayo men will face a very tough task this weekend if they are to get some more points on the board when they have league champions, Ballina Tow,n coming to their home patch in their first Super League home game.

Ballyglass were the winners in last weekend's Super League local derby, emerging 2-1 winners over Manulla on Sunday morning in Keaveny Park. The visitors had the better of the first half but goals after the break from Evan Connolly and Ryan Connolly, had the hosts 2-0 up. Jesse Devers pulled one back - but Ballyglass were able to hold on to pick up win number two of the season.

Tom Connolly's men will be looking to pick up win number three when they travel to Quigley Park to take on Ballyheane on Saturday evening. Manulla will be at home on Sunday morning when they host Claremorris in Carramore. The south Mayo men head into this one on the back of a 3-0 win over Snugboro United last weekend, where Dean Roddy grabbed a hat-trick, giving them their first win of the season.

Ballina Town B keep up 100 per cent record

In the Premier League, Ballina Town B made it three from three with a 3-0 win over Fahy Rovers, with Stephen Moyles, Shane Devers and Ryan Moran getting the goals. The north Mayo men will look to keep up that winning run when they travel to Swinford on Sunday - the east Mayo men have two wins from three and head into this one on the back of a 5-0 win over Bangor Hibs, with Paddy O'Donnell scoring two off the bench late on to go with goals from Martin Murphy, Joe Slevin and Johnny McNulty.

In the north Mayo derby last weekend, Iorras Aontaithe put three past Conn Rangers in the second half, with Dylan Walker, Pete McArthur and Brendan Nallen getting the goals. This weekend they are away to Fahy Rovers in what should be a tough outing. Conn Rangers are pointless at the minute and they will host Achill Rovers on Saturday night and the islanders go into this one on the back of 0-0 draw with Glenhest Rovers last weekend.

The other games this weekend in the division sees Bangor Hibs host Kiltimagh-Knock United, who had last weekend off due to Manulla's involvement in the Connacht Shield where they had a 4-1 win over West United B and they will travel to Glenhest Rovers on Sunday evening, looking to make it three wins from three.
