The Cashel Village Enhancement Group, which is part of the Cashel Women’s Group based on Achill Island, is launching a petition to ask Mayo County Council and the Department of Transport to evaluate three bridges located in the village on the R319.
The R319 is the regional road running through Achill, the main thoroughfare both residential and tourism traffic use to access the island, follow the Wild Atlantic Way and visit the area's five Blue Flag Beaches. The problem area is with a stretch of road on the R319 between the L5443 to Saula and the L1405 to Dooega.
The group is seeking help from local road users, people offering tourism and accommodation services, people who visit the island regularly, as well as suppliers of goods and services who need access to the wider Achill area.
The focus of this petition is on the bridges at the approach to the village of Cashel from the Achill Sound direction. These particular locations have been identified as problematic for traffic, as the road is narrow and uneven and the bridges are on a curve in the road.
The petitions will be available in local shops and businesses. There will also be an online petition on the www.change.org website. The petition is called Bridging the Safety Gap and can be signed online at: http://chng.it/482bGXQ57R.
The group is asking people to help raise awareness and get behind this campaign to let the council know that an improvement needs to be made for the safety of all who use the road.
