Castlebar Municipal District Fine Gael Cllr Cyril Burke has welcomed the funding announced by Minister Michael Ring in relation to the Community Services Programme.
Cllr Burke said: "These community organisations run badly needed services for our communities and this funding is critical to their existence. Funding of €89,000 to Castlebar Social Services, €40,000 to Ballyheane Community Sports Club, €112,000 to Ballintubber Abbey Trust and €92,000 to Castlebar Community Radio is most welcome in the Castlebar Municipal District.
"In fact the funding for Ballintubber Abbey Trust couldn’t come at a better time as we set about a huge funding campaign to carry out a major development at the historic Abbey."
Cllr Burke has requested that a presentation be made at the next Castlebar Municipal District meeting by the Trust along with members of the Tourism/Community departments of the county council to explain to the general public the plans for Ballintubber Abbey and the stage the project is currently at.
