Linenhall Film Club: Shoplifters

Linenhall Film Club continues its Spring 2019 programme with Hirokazu Kore-eda’s tender, humorous and moving Japanese drama Shoplifters, screening on Tuesday March 26 at 8pm.

Osamu, his wife Nobuyu and grandma Hatsue head the Shibatas, a family living just above the poverty line. When Osamu and his son Shota take in what appears to be an abandoned little girl, Yuri, the seams of this brittle and unconventional family begin to unravel. Shoplifters is a brilliant and nuanced moral inquiry about the forces holding a struggling family together. Tender, compassionate but also enduringly humorous, Kore-eda unfolds a drama which is profoundly moving, in the process conspicuously revealing a Japan rarely seen. Nominated at Golden Globes and Oscars, and winner of the 2018 Palme d’Or. Cert: 15A

“A movie made up of delicate brushstrokes: details, moments, looks and smiles.” - Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
