Independent local election candidate for the Castlebar Municipal District, Harry Barrett, has hit out at the lack of lighting and footpaths on what he described as "the most dangerous stretch of road in the town."
Barrett said this week: "I am shocked and amazed that the residents of Summerfield in Castlebar are still waiting for public lighting and a public footpath. This stretch of road is definitely the most dangerous in the town."
He went on to say: "In a recent canvass of Summerfield, residents pointed out what is the most dangerous stretch of road in the town. Young children are expected to walk about 100m without a public footpath and without public lighting to get to school in the morning and to walk home from their evening studies. It is dark and dangerous and it is an accident waiting to happen. Mayo County Council must act on this immediately."
Barrett concluded by saying: "If elected, I will not rest until this estate of 74 houses is connected to the town. How this estate was given planning permission without public lighting and a public footpath is beyond me. It is a serious and dangerous oversight that planning was given without basic public amenities being put in place."
