No commitment from TII on Barley Hill

Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII ) has given no commitment to Mayo County Council to install safety barriers at Barley Hill on the Westport to Newport road.

Independent Cllr Michael Holmes raised the issue at the January meeting of the West Mayo Municipal District in January and asked the council to write to TII in relation to the installation of barriers on the road side. At the February meeting of the local authority he asked had there been any response to the letter from the council.

Padraig Walsh, head of the Municipal District for Mayo County Council, said that he had made contact with the relevant people but had got no commitment from them to do anything in the interim before a major upgrade of the road, that is planned, goes ahead.

Cllr Holmes said that he will continue to press on the issue and hit out at TII saying: "They will not allow anyone to build a new house along the N59 because of safety concerns and here is a very blatant safety concern they are doing nothing about; if there is an accident at that section of the road it can only end up being very serious."
