Last Friday night’s away game to Warriors in Strokestown marked two thirds of the games played in the LLR league for Mustangs, following which the Castlebar side remain top of the league table with eight wins from eight games.
The two main features of this game were Mustangs’ steals (Siobhan Kilkenny, Grainne Flynn, Lorna Moran, Niamh Griffin and Sinead Hughes ) and blocks (Kilkenny on a whopping five blocks and Flynn with an NBA style block ).
Mustangs played this game very much in a high tempo fashion. Quick hands led to steals, steals followed with fast breaks and fast breaks finished with scores from Ciara Griffin and Grainne Flynn and indeed, Griffin finished the quarter as top scorer on a massive 10 point tally. The scores read 21-12 to Mustangs at the end of the first quarter.
Player-coach Kilkenny made her scoring game a three point feast in this encounter, amassing a total of six for the match. Rebounds were vacuumed up both offensively and defensively by Lorna Moran, Anita Hoban, Indre Guscuiviene, Kilkenny and Flynn. The second quarter finished on 32-21 to Mustangs.
The third quarter continued with blocks, steals and fast breaks and by the time the quarter had finished, Mustangs led by 54 points to 35.
The final quarter saw all Mustang players enter the game and they proceeded to win the fourth just as they had won the other three. Niamh Griffin stole the ball as soon as she had stepped on the court and indeed closed out the game with the final basket for the Mustangs. Final scoreline read 68-47 to the Castlebar side.
