The 'best kept secret' is how the Local Link bus service in Mayo was described by numerous councillors at Mayo County Council’s monthly meeting on Monday afternoon.
The need to promote this service to a far greater level was agreed by all members in the chamber, in order to make sure that as many people as possible are made aware of the service.
Sara Togher, manager of Local Link Mayo, gave the elected members a presentation on the services provided by the organisation around the county. The service provides weekly and daily bus services to access local villages and towns for rural dwellers for things like shopping and medical appointments.
There was widespread praise for the service in helping to combat rural isolation in rural areas, with Fine Gael Cllr, Jarlath Munnelly, highlighting the link that brings people from rural areas into Killala in the evening and home again at 11pm as a great service - that can help keep local communities alive.
Fianna Fail Cllr, Damien Ryan, proposed that the council write to the Minister for Transport, Shane Ross, to look for extra funding for projects like this. He added that the recent changes to the drink driving laws have further isolated people in rural Ireland and services like this can help people to not feel so isolated.
