Two members of the West Mayo Municipal District appealed for other candidates in next year's Local Elections not to use posters in the district.
Cathaoirleach of the district Fianna Fáil Cllr Brendan Mulroy and Independent Cllr Christy Hyland made the appeal at the December meeting of the local authority, citing a long running tradition that had been followed by candidates in the old Westport Town Council district where candidates did not erect posters in the town in the weeks before the elections.
Both Hyland and Mulroy said they would not be putting up posters, with Mulroy saying that candidates would be talking with 'forked tongues' when they encourage school children to be more environmentally friendly, if they put up posters that end up spoiling the views of the area and could end up blowing around in the wind.
Independent Cllr Michael Holmes said he had no problem going along with the idea, to much laughter, as the councillor had previously announced he would not be running for election this time after serving as a councillor for a long number of years.
The meeting was told that there was nothing the council could do to stop candidates putting up posters as it was allowed under a national law and it was a decision for each individual candidate to make.
