Newport in shock after Christmas morning tragedy

The community in Newport were left numbed this week after a young local man died in an accident early on Christmas morning.

The man, named locally as 25-year-old Christopher McNally, died from injuries sustained in a fall near his apartment on Tuesday.

Gardaí were called to the scene at the Quay Road, when the body of the man was discovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr McNally, a native of the area worked as a marine environmentalist in the town.

His body was removed to Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar where a post mortem took place on Tueaday afternoon, conducted by State pathologist Dr Michael Curtis, who also visited the scene of the accident.

News of the sudden death has caused much sadness and grief in the town and consequently, a large crowd turned out last night (Thursday ) for the removal of Mr McNally’s remains from St. Dominic’s Funeral Home, Newport.

His funeral mass will take place this at 11 am today (Friday ) at St. Patrick’s Church, Newport with burial afterwards in Kilbride Cemetery.
