Popular broadcaster Paschal Mooney of Drumshanbo is seeking a nomination to contest the forthcoming European elections at the Fianna Fáil convention in Castlebar on Sunday next.
Mooney, who is currently chairman of Fáilte Ireland North West, is a former councillor and senator and has served on a number of European bodies including the Council of Europe and the WEU Parliamentary Assembly. He was also the first Irishman to be elected chairman of the Council of Europe Human Rights committee as well as serving on the Joint House committee on Foreign Affairs and the Forum on Europe.
Mr Mooney is ideally located to be the party’s Northern and Midlands placed candidate as it is expected the outgoing MEP Seán O Neachtáin will be automatically selected at convention.
