Slow moving traffic should be given the opportunity to pull in to allow faster traffic to proceed without unnecessary delays, according to Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council Councillor Joe Mellett.
This could be done by the local authorities acquiring small areas of land to provide proper lay-bys on all of our roads and in particular the narrow county and secondary roads.
It could also be implemented on our national primary roads by designating areas of the hard shoulder which could be used for this purpose. Cllr Mellett suggests that it would be illegal to use those designated areas for any other purpose. Cllr Mellett says that safety is paramount on our roads and many accidents are caused by traffic attempting to pass slower moving vehicles. Mayo is mainly a rural county and the farming community when using their tractors, etc, should be accommodated. Cllr Mellett would welcome the opinion of the general public on his proposals.
