A Peter Corcoran goal just after the hour mark was enough to edge Westport United into the last 32 of the FAI Junior Cup last weekend.
United saw off the challenge of Ballinasloe Town on their own patch in a keenly contested affair. Corcoran struck after both David Hoban and Mark McDonagh had been denied by Ballinasloe keeper' Padraig Maloney in the build up and John Russell's side were able to hold on to see out the game and book their spot in the next round of the competition.
The two other Mayo sides in action in the fifth round of the competition last weekend did not fare so well, with both Castlebar Celtic and Conn Rangers bowing out to Dublin outfits Usher Celtic and Sheriff YC respectively.
Celtic were seen off by Usher Celtic on a score of 5-0 at home, with Usher leading 3-0 at the break thanks to goals from Jason Ivory, Leeroy Staunton, and Glenn Ready - with their second half goals coming from a Jordan Buckley brace.
In north Mayo - Conn Rangers were unsurprisingly seen off by Sheriff YC who have won the FAI Junior Cup in 2012, 2013 and 2016 and lost the 2015 final. Rangers were beaten 5-1 in Mount Falcon with Luke Ruane scoring his sides goal 20 minutes in, to give his side some home having fallen behind 2-0 early doors thanks to goals from Jack McMahon and Peter Oglesby. However the vistors hit back with a third goal from Mark Quigley to go in leading 3-1 at the break. The added two more goals in the second half from Oglesby and Shane Rooney.
