United, Celtic and Rangers progress in FAI Junior Cup
A rocket of a goal from Mikey O'Brien three minutes from the end of time saw Westport United progress into the final 64 of the FAI Junior Cup last weekend. O'Brien's goal edged out a battling Manulla side 3-2, in a game that saw four of the five goals coming in the second half. David Hoban nodded Westport ahead just before the break, but the lead only lasted two minutes in the second half when Conor Byrne drove home a free kick to level it up. The visitors then went into the lead as Franny De Silva bundled the ball home from close range.
But Westport were not to be undone and they battled back and two minutes later pulled themselves level. Darren Browne rustled the back of the net and then, with not long left, O'Brien sent John Russell's men into the next round of the competition they won back in 2005.
Castlebar Celtic had a much easier progression to the next round with a 4-1 win over Straide and Foxford United in Green Road. Jose Sola put the Hoops ahead just after the five minute mark. Paul Moran levelled it up just after the 20 minute mark. Celtic edged themselves back in front with Ruairi Nevin hammering the ball home from a tight angle.
Celtic had a number of chances in the second half but it only expanded their lead eight minutes from tie when Liam Flatley hit their third of the day and they wrapped up the scoring on 90 minutes when Mark Howley bagged their fourth of the day.
The other Mayo side to progress to the last 64 was north Mayo Premier Division outfit Conn Rangers who had a 2-1 win over Killala in Mount Falcon, with the goals for the victors coming from Owen McNamara and Jayo Farrell.
