CRC celebrate on the double

Community Radio Castlebar is celebrating on the double after picking up two national awards in Athlone recently.

The CRAOL Community Radio awards took place last month and CRC FM presenters Mike Kelly and Niamh O’Kelly were honoured on the night.

Niamh O’Kelly, a former chairperson of CRC FM, presents Classics and More, which can be heard twice weekly on the Castlebar station, every Friday evening at 8pm and Sunday morning at 9am.

Classics and More was commended with the Silver CRAOL award in the Social Benefit category with judges remarking it was: "A well researched programme with an excellent presenter; classical music being brought to listeners in an informative and relatable context; very enjoyable."

Mike Kelly, along with Jimmy Blake, Benen Tierney and Declan Kilkelly, were awarded the Gold CRAOL award in the Community Participation category for the Up For The Match All-Ireland Final Preview Show, which took place in the Hogs Heaven Bar, Castlebar, in the build-up to the 2017 All-Ireland final between Mayo and Dublin.

The show on the night included special guests John Maughan, Cora Staunton, Willie Joe Padden, local journalists and well known personalities from the GAA in Mayo.

The judges' remarks on the sports show were: "The excitement of the occasion was palpable, a great choice of venue; a great panel choice for the night and a fabulous connection between the game and local community; a fine example of community broadcasting from the heart of the community. We are sure all dials in the area were tuned to 102.9 FM for this."

You can catch the Sports Show on CRC FM every Saturday afternoon between 2-4pm. CRC FM would like to congratulate everyone involved in bringing both prestigious awards back to the station and to the Castlebar community.
