Today will mark the official opening of the long awaited Belmullet Sewerage Scheme.
The €9 million project which was a partnership between Irish Water and Mayo County Council, had its first sod turned in July 2016, with Roadbridge and EPS carrying out the works on the scheme.
The scheme will be officially opened by Minister Michael Ring and Cllr Blackie Gavin, Cathaoirleach of Mayo County Council this morning, Friday, November 2 at 11am at the Belmullet Civic Centre.
The event marks the completion of a €9 million investment in the construction of a new wastewater treatment plant in Belmullet. Prior to the completion of these works, Belmullet was one of 44 locations around Ireland where wastewater was being discharged into the natural environment, untreated. Irish Water has completed this work as part of its commitment to end the practise of discharging untreated wastewater across Ireland by 2021.
The works included: (1 ) A new wastewater treatment plant on the Toorglass Road. The new plant provides for a population equivalent (PE ) of 2,500; (2 ) A new marine outfall pipe into Blacksod Bay, eliminating the existing discharge of untreated effluent from Belmullet town into Broadhaven Bay; (3 ) Two new pumping stations on Sea Road and at the Quay; and (4 ) The rehabilitation of the existing wastewater network, including 1.5km of new foul sewers and 0.15km of surface water sewer.
