Castlebar moved up to fourth place in the Connacht Junior 1A table last weekend, thanks to a 13 point victory over Sligo on Sunday afternoon.
The Cloondeash men were the only Mayo side in action last weekend and they ran in four tries, thanks to five pointers from Fintan Murphy, Jason High, Luke Staunton and Jack Rowland, to set up a 25-12 win, with Damien Togher adding the other points from the boot.
This weekend Castlebar face another serious test of their ambitions when they take on the unbeaten league leaders, Monivea, at home on Sunday afternoon. Monivea have won four from four so far this season, beating Connemara, Sligo, Westport and Buccaneers in their outings to date.
Third placed Westport had last weekend off and they will look to keep up their title challenge when they get back to the action on Sunday, travelling to play a bottom of the table, Galwegians. Westport have won three of their five games so far this season in the league, beating Sligo, Buccaneers and Castlebar - while going down to Creggs and league leaders, Monivea.
Ballinrobe will be back in action in Junior 1B on Sunday when they host Dunmore at 3pm. The south Mayo outfit are currently in fourth place in the league, with two wins and three losses to date in the competition. In their last outing, Ballinrobe went down 31-41 to local rivals Corrib, in a high scoring encounter last month.
So far this season, Ballinrobe have picked up wins against Loughrea and Ballinasloe, while they have lost to Corrib, Corinthians and NUIG. On Sunday they will face a Dunmore side who have registered just one win from five, against Corrib, in round three.
In Junior 1C, both Ballyhaunis and Ballina are locked together on 10 points each after the opening few rounds of games. The north Mayo men currently edge out their fellow Mayo men in the table on points difference, but there is a long season yet to go.
This weekend, Ballyhaunis will host a Portumna side, who are rooted to the bottom of the table with just one win from four and the east Mayo men will be looking to pick up their third win of the season under the lights at home on Saturday night. Ballina will face a tougher test when they host the current league leaders, Creggs. in Heffernan Park on Sunday afternoon.
