Ballina keep up winning ways

Rugby: AIL & Connacht Junior League

Ballina made it two from two in Division 2C of the All Ireland League last weekend with a 36-17 bonus point win over Tullamore on the road.

The north Mayo men ran in four tries, with their round one hero, Chris O'Neill, touching down twice for the Heffernan Park outfit and Darragh Whyte also crossing the try-line twice, while out-half Kieran Lindsay added 16 points from his boot over the 80 minutes.

This weekend Ballina will be at home for their round three clash against Malahide, the north Dublin outfit come to Mayo on the back of two losses from their opening two games. Last time out they were beaten 32-17 by Omagh on the road and in round one they were 44-19 at home by Bangor.

Westport pick up second win of the season

Westport made it two wins from three games in the top flight of the Connacht Junior League, last weekend the Bulls ran out 20-15 winners in Athlone against Buccaneers. Kevin Corcoran and Aidan Walsh scored tries in either half, while Danny McGowan converted both five pointers and added two penalties to see Walter Gibbons' men home despite the efforts of the midlanders.

This weekend the Bulls are on the road again when they take on a Monivea side who are level with them on eight points at the top of the table, alongside Creggs.

The aforementioned Creggs made it two wins from two last weekend - with a hard fought 6-0 win over Castlebar in Cloondeash on Saturday night, that was Castlebar's second loss from their two opening games and they will look to pick up their first win of the season when they take on local rivals Westport in a fortnight's time.

In the second tier of provincial junior rugby, Ballinrobe made it two wins from three with a 12-0 win over Ballinasloe in The Green on Sunday afternoon. Tom Staunton was the leader on the field kicking four penalties over the 80 minutes, to move his side into fourth place in the table. On Sunday they will make the trip south to Galway City to take on the students from NUIG, who also have two wins from their opening three games.
