Mayo garda in critical condition following Donegal incident

A garda who was on life support at Letterkenny General Hospital yesterday (Thursday ) after he was struck by a stolen car is believed to be 29-year-old Garda Robert McCallion from Swinford.

Garda McCallion, who received head and arm injuries, remains in a critical condition in hospital after being knocked down while on duty in Letterkenny. He was transferred to Beaumont Hospital, Dublin yesterday afternoon.

The incident occurred at 4.30am on March 26 while Garda McCallion and two others were responding to a report of suspicious activity in the Tara Court area of the town. The injuries were received as the garda was pinned to a wall after he got out of the patrol car to speak to the driver of the stolen car.

A juvenile male was arrested at the scene following the incident and a second male in his late teens was arrested in a follow-up operation near Milford. They are both detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act at Letterkenny.

The incident is under investigation by Letterkenny gardaí and the scene was preserved for a technical forensic examination. Two cars are also preserved for technical examination. One of the cars was taken, without the consent of the owner, from a house in the area.

Garda McCallion graduated from Templemore Garda Training College in Co Tipperary on Friday, February 2 2007. He was one of 15 Mayo gardaí to graduate on the day.
