Drunk Ballina man resisted arrest

A man who was intoxicated and was threatening and abusive on the streets of Ballina and who had to be physically restrained by gardaí when placed in the patrol car was convicted and fined a total of €900 for three public order offences at Ballina District Court on Tuesday.

Garda Petrina Devery observed Vincent Beattie, 5 Corcoran Terrace, Ballina, on November 30 2008 at 1.15am on Pearse Street where he was roaring and shouting and being held back from an altercation by a friend. Beattie, who was intoxicated, was directed to leave the area, however he failed to do so and Garda Devery attempted to arrest him. The defendant resisted arrest and had to be restrained.

Beattie, who represented himself, told the court that he works in Tesco. Judge Mary Devins convicted and fined the man, who has no previous convictions, €500 for failing to comply with a Garda direction; €100 for being drunk in a public place and €300 for being threatening and abusive.
