Community mourns passing of two popular figures

Two local women who lost their lives last Thursday in Ballinasloe were laid to rest this week.

Maureen Dooley, who taught maths at Marist College and was on the teaching staff at the school for 22 years, was walking with her friend Deirdre Kilmartin on Station Road in Ballinasloe on Thursday evening a little before 6pm, when both were struck by a vehicle.

The women were struck following an incident involving two other cars, and were pronounced dead at the scene following the arrival of emergency services.

The funeral of Deirdre Kilmartin took place on Monday. Ms Kilmartin was from originally from Shralea, Creagh, in Ballinasloe and worked in a local veterinary surgery.

Locals, friends and family gathered in St Michael’s Church, Ballinasloe, on Tuesday to celebrate the life of Ms Dooley, who was later laid to rest in Creagh cemetery.

Ms Dooley and Ms Kilmartin, who were both married with children, were in their mid-50s and were prominent, much loved figures in the community.
