Last call for Westmeath primary schools to enter the Awards of Science Excellence

Discover Primary Science has put out the last call for Westmeath schools to signal their intention to apply for an Award of Science Excellence ahead of the deadline of March 31. All primary schools registered for the DPS programme who intend to make a submission for the Awards of Science Excellence can apply online at www.primaryscience.ie or call Discover Primary Science on (01 ) 607 3184.

Last year 15 Westmeath schools received Awards of Science Excellence. Nine local schools have signalled that they plan on entering the Awards of Science Excellence in 2009 so far. Discover Primary Science is now calling on teachers to register their class and break the record set by Westmeath schools in 2008. The Awards of Science Excellence acknowledge the efforts of primary school children and teachers who have shown an increased knowledge of science and its many applications as a result of participation in the Discover Primary Science (DPS ) programme.

Oonagh Meighan, project manager of the Discover Primary Science programme, said, “We were delighted with the level of participation by schools in Westmeath in last year’s Awards of Science Excellence and impressed with the quality of entries. We are now calling on local schools to enter the Awards of Science Excellence 2009 and give students an opportunity to showcase their knowledge and enthusiasm for science.”

Registered schools applying for an Award of Science Excellence must keep a discover log recording their science related work which must be submitted by May 1.

The assessment of the Awards of Science Excellence process begins following the closing date for submissions on May 1. Registered schools, who have applied on the website by the end of March, will receive an application form in the mail, close to the submission date.
