Midland artisans meet in Athlone

Local craft makers, business people and members of Westmeath and Offaly Enterprise Boards gathered at the Hodson Bay Hotel this week (March 18 ) for a special networking evening hosted by the Crafts Council of Ireland (CCI ).

The meeting was part of a series of such events held throughout the country during 2009 to promote dialogue between the CCI and craft enterprises, networks and the major players in the sector.

The evening was attended by craftspeople of all disciplines, including current and prospective retailers of crafted design, owners of galleries and art centres and individuals involved in supporting and promoting craft enterprises.

Attendees were able to learn about CCI services and meet board members before a presentation by Úna Parsons, CEO of CCI on the work of her council and its future plans to further assist craft makers and help grow the €122m craft sector.

Craft makers and micro enterprises were made aware of the training and development available to them via the Crafts Council of Ireland to improve capabilities and competencies in a competitive retail environment.

This was followed by an open discussion chaired by Gerry Wycherley, chairman of CCI.

“It is wonderful to see such a vibrant creative sector in the Midlands. CORE Crafted Design features the work of 60 craftspeople from the surrounding counties and Fáilte Ireland is working with tour operators to bring groups there,” said Úna Parsons.

Offering everything from a café to art and crafts classes for children, the development of regional retail outlets like CORE provides local makers with a fantastic opportunity to introduce their products to prospective customers.”
