Expert advice for tackling ageing

Susan Reynolds, manager of Au Naturel Athlone gives some helpful advice in prevent ageing.

Though ageing is the normal wear and tear of the body which occurs as we grow older, there are certain steps that can be taken to slow down this process.

Prevention is always the best policy when it comes to your health, and eating well throughout a lifetime reaps its rewards. A diet rich in antioxidants is key. Antioxidants are plentiful in fresh fruit, vegetables, sprouts and grains, so eating good quantites of these can help slow down the speed of ageing. Especially helpful would be eating organic/home-grown vegetables and making homemade salads.

The consumption of a variety of nuts, lentils, pumpkin, sesame, sunflower and linseeds for protein, essential fatty acids, zinc, magnesium and other important nutrients can further improve your health.

Fish also contains essential fatty acids which are important for normal brain function and healthy skin, while also acting as an anti-inflammatory for joints. The best dietary sources of vitamins A and C are carrots, peppers, broccoli, watercress, blackcurrants, strawberries and oranges. Vitamin E is contained in wheat germ, nuts and seeds. The B group of vitamins work on the central nervous system for stress, concentration, memory, and energy levels, and are found mainly in green vegetables.

Typically, garlic is antioxidant and is good for the heart, helping to reduce cholesterol and blood pressure, as well as boosting the immune system. Simply adding a clove of garlic to meals can help reduce the health risks of ageing.

Flouride from Irish tap water remains to be the most menacing toxin we ingest here in Ireland. It is a major contributor in cancer and breaks down the myelin sheath which surrounds the nervous system. This in turn causes memory loss and dementia. Well water or filtering is the only solution to rid your water of flouride.

As an added help, Nature’s Plus have developed a new range of supplements called AgeLoss, containing 18 different products that target different areas of the body. All of the products contain high antioxidants and anti-inflammatory ingredients and target areas such as the heart, joints, brain, hearing, eyes, blood, thyroid and more.
