Works recommence on Church Street this week

Drainage works associated with the Church Street enhancement project recommenced on Monday this week, but the council has still no definite date for the introduction of the one-way system.

The current works will take place between 7pm and 3am from Monday to Thursday for a number of weeks, district manager Pat Keating informed January’s meeting of the Athlone Municipal District. The erection of new signage and traffic light upgrades will also take place this month.

Mr Keating told councillors that a letter of intent has now been issued to the preferred contractor. Following a statutory standstill period, the contractor will issue a letter of acceptance provided he has submitted all required documentation and there has been no legal challenges. A commencement day will then be agreed upon for the introduction of the one-way system.

A media briefing will take place in the atrium of the Civic Centre before the system is introduced as part of the overall communications strategy associated with the project.

A draft information leaflet will be provided to local media outlets providing information on what is taking place and why. Radio adverts will also issue two weeks before and one week after the one-way is introduced, and there will also be updates on the council’s Facebook and Twitter pages. A new project liaison officer, Declan Henehan, has already started in his role.
