Local independent councillor, AIlish McManus has called on the council to remove the now dangerous traffic control measures near the fire station on Coosan Point Road.
The measures were introduced a number of years ago in response to concerns raised by people in the locality about the speed some vehicles were reaching on the stretch of road between the station and Auburn Villas.
However, Cllr McManus says the measure, while welcome at the time, is now acting as a very serious safety concern for both cyclists and motorists.
Cllr McManus said that she and other public representatives have been lobbied frequently of late by locals concerned at the current situation.
In particular, there is no cycle lane on the road, meaning cyclists are being forced to weave in and out of the traffic measures, causing danger for both themselves and other road users. With promotion of the greenway a major issue for the council, and cycling as a consequence, Cllr McManus said there is a need to ensure that Athlone provides for the safety of those people who choose to take their bike rather than their car on the road.
