The turning on of the Christmas lights in Athlone is set to take place a week earlier this year.
The Christmas lights are generally turned on after the December meeting of the Athlone Municipal District, which takes place on the first Monday of the month, on December 4 this year.
However, it was suggested by Mayor Aengus O’Rourke that the turning on of the lights be moved to November 26, a Sunday.
Mayor O’Rourke said this will allow families to attend the event together. He said there is some entertainment planned for the day, including music from the Army Band.
The event will commence at 4pm, and the lights will be turned on at 5pm.
