Athlone Christmas Market will take place on December 10 this year in the John Count McCormack Civic Square.
The market promises an event-filled day for children and families, complete with Santa, elves, clowns, music, entertainment, face-painting and treats galore.
Unlike similar events in many other towns, this market is not a commercial enterprise. Instead, it is a community organised event for the people of the town and surrounding areas. It is expected that the festive market will draw in people from a wide area, which should also increase footfall to local established businesses.
Mr. Shay Hamilton, Chairman of the Christmas Market Committee stated that he is delighted to see the market return, and is proud of the work the committee has done in organising it. “There is great energy and enthusiasm within the group to build on the Christmas Market theme as it adds to the promotion of Athlone as a destination to live, work and visit,” he said.
Committee member Cllr. Frankie Keena said that he is “delighted to be involved again this year whereby numerous extra attractions and entertainment will be laid on for both children and adults,” adding: “Unfortunately the weather did not help us last year but it will not deter us as I am sure everyone agrees with me when I say that Christmas Markets create a fabulous festive atmosphere and provide enjoyment to all ages.”
With the demands of the Christmas period in mind, the market committee is asking for your support. A fundraiser table quiz will take place on November 17 in the Prince of Wales Hotel. Entry costs €40 per table. Local businesses and people are being asked to contribute a prize for the table quiz.
Should you wish to contribute a prize or make a donation, committee members will call to your premises to collect.
Added to this, anyone interested in taking a stall on the day is welcome to do so for a nominal fee.
To enter the table quiz, rent a stall, or donate a prize, contact [email protected] or the Christmas Market Facebook page.
